The man I called "Jerry Flawless" is dead.

CNN: Jerry Falwell Dies

Baltimore Sun: Falwell Dead

And I say: GOOD.

This is the man who, in addition to bailing out crooks Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, in addition to bilking his own followers for millions, in addition to founding a university for the sole purpose of bringing about a theocratic United States, said all of the following:

"God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve ... The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this ... And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say, "You helped this happen." - in regards to the 9-11 attacks, as reported in The Washington Post, 9-14-07, and other sources

"I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!" - from his book, America Can Be Saved!, published 1979

"The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country." - sermon, July 4, 1976

"The Jews are returning to their land of unbelief. They are spiritually blind and desperately in need of their Messiah and Savior." - from Listen America!

"... the Bible is absolutely infallible, without error in all matters pertaining to faith and practice, as well as in areas such as geography, science, history, etc." - Ibid.

"I do not believe the homosexual community deserves minority status. One's misbehavior does not qualify him or her for minority status. Blacks, Hispanics, women, etc., are God-ordained minorities who do indeed deserve minority status." - as reported by USA Today

"I believe that it would be damaging to the cause of Christ in this country for a minister to go to jail." -referring to Jim Bakker, reported by the New York Times, 6-11-1987; compare this to the unattributed quote from Falwell, “Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan in America”."

"Most American children do not know that this is a Christian nation... [O]ur Constitution won't work in Russia, won't work in Haiti, won't work in Iraq. It only works where the people believe in the Christ of the Bible. The United States of America."
- from "Sunday Live with Jerry Falwell," July 23, 1996; compare this with:

"One of the primary purposes of the church is to stop the spread of evil, even at the cost of human lives. If we do not stop the spread of evil, many innocent lives will be lost and the kingdom of God suffers." - from this WorldNetDaily article, dated 12-31-2004

Plus all the following unattributed quotes, which may or may not be accurate:

"I want you to have all the academic freedom you want as long as you wind up saying the bible account (of creation) is true and all others are not."

“Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions.”

“AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.”

“The whole (global warming) thing is created to destroy America's free enterprise system and our economic stability.”

“If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being.”

A great evil has passed from this Earth. God- whatever you may see Him as being- may be more merciful than I am- I hope he is, for my sake at least- but I for one don't see Falwell as having earned wings and a harp by his conduct here on Earth.

And if he has, I'd as soon not go to Heaven anyway; wouldn't care for the company.

Oh- and my favorite Falwell quote is not by Falwell, but by Barry Goldwater, in response to Falwell's call on "every good Christian" to protest Sandra Day O'Connor's appointment to the Supreme Court:

"Every good Christian ought to kick Jerry Falwell in the ass."
